3-day trip itinerary to the state of Zacatecas which includes the pueblos mágicos (magic towns) of Teúl and Jerez, and a visit to the city of Zacatecas.

About This Trip

Zacatecas is one of those places that is underrated. If you are looking for a place to visit without tons of tourists, this is the place to visit.

This Zacatecas itinerary takes you through a couple of pueblos mágicos (magic towns) in Zacatecas state on our your way to Zacatecas city.

When we did this trip, we started off from Guadalajara, driving towards Zacatecas. We got to admire the beautiful landscape while making a couple of memorable stops: Teúl and Jerez.

You can read about our activity-packed, 1-day trip through the city of Zacatecas at the link below.

Day 1: Teúl and Jerez

Transportation: If you leave Guadalajara early in the morning, you can cover both pueblos mágicos. You’ll have to be efficient, though! Otherwise you can take a day trip from Zacatecas over to Jerez. Each city is about 2.5 hours away from each other if starting from the Guadalajara airport

Getting around: Hardly any traffic at all here. Very laid-back drive in and out of these towns. You park your car almost anywhere, and you can walk most points of interest.

Lodging: None. The two cities are pit stops.

Teúl

Teúl de González Ortega (Teúl for short) is a small, peaceful pueblo mágico with an enjoyable historic downtown area. The area has been shaped by both its original, native groups as well as the Spanish influence.

You can admire the architecture and churches of the town. We had one additional pleasant surprise when visiting: all of its orange trees were full with oranges!

In addition, you can taste the local mezcal by doing a tasting and taking a tour of Mezcal Don Aurelio.

Jerez

Officially called Jerez de García Salinas, this pueblo mágico was a joy to visit. From the grounds of the Jardín Principal Rafel Páez, to its calm streets, Jerez is a must-see stop on your way to Zacatecas city. El Teatro Hinojosa is a sight to see and enjoy on a calm afternoon.

Day 2 & 3: Zacatecas

Transportation: Zacatecas is a large city. My recommendation is to leave your car parked at the hotel, and walk to its historic downtown. Take a taxi to the Cerro de la Bufa area, if you prefer to avoid a longer walk.

Lodging: You must stay at the Quinta Real Zacatecas. Staying here is part of the experience. This used to be a bullring, and it has an amazing view.

Attractions: There is quite a bit to see in this amazing, colonial city: its cathedral, the Cerro de la Bufa, the Eden Mine, its museums, and of course, the callejoneadas. For a full list of activities, be sure to read about our visit to this amazing city.
